Dictation
The pace comes from the voice, not from you
Speech runs at 130 words per minute and more; a well-trained teenager types at 40. Every other typing exercise lets you slow down until you are comfortable. Dictation is the one mode where the pace pushes from outside: the audio plays, the screen stays blank, and your hands have to keep up.
The ladder: 15 to 40 words per minute
Each rung reads the same kind of passage a little faster and marks it a little harder. The bottom forgives capital letters and full stops while the hands find their feet; the top forgives nothing.

How a run works
A passage is read aloud a phrase at a time. After each phrase the audio waits exactly as long as those words take at the target speed, then reads on. There is nothing to read and nothing to copy: the words never appear on the screen until the end, when the marking shows the passage against what you typed.
