TypingCoach for schools
Everything a data protection officer, IT manager or business manager needs before saying yes: what data TypingCoach holds, how long it keeps it, how accessible it is, and how a class gets set up. The procurement pack below collects it all into a two-page PDF you can file.
The procurement pack
A two-page PDF covering the data processed, controller and processor roles, retention periods, hosting, account setup, single sign-on and the deletion process. Written to be filed with a DPIA, not read on a screen.

Data retention at a glance
Retention is enforced by scheduled jobs, not by policy documents alone. The periods below are what the software actually does:
- Keystroke and mouse event logs exist only to verify scores and are deleted at the end of the school term in which they were recorded.
- Attempt summaries speed, accuracy, lessons completed and badges form the learning record and are kept for the life of the account.
- Inactive accounts are deleted, with all their data, after two years without a sign-in. Accounts with an email address are warned 30 days before deletion, and signing in cancels it.
- Deletion requests are honoured within 30 days, whether they come from the account holder or from the school for its pupils.
Accessibility status
TypingCoach was audited against WCAG 2.1 AA in August 2026, covering keyboard navigation, focus visibility, screen reader labelling, colour contrast in both themes, and the language tagging of bilingual content. Every issue the audit found has been fixed, including colour contrast below the AA minimum, a missing skip link, and silent progress updates in the typing trainer, which now announces speed and accuracy to screen readers while an attempt runs.
Hands-on testing with NVDA and VoiceOver is still to be completed, so we do not yet claim WCAG conformance. Motion can be reduced from the operating system preference or an in-app toggle, and the mouse-skills drills, which are pointer-based by nature, sit alongside fully keyboard-accessible lessons, practice and tests.
Technical requirements
- A modern browser: current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. TypingCoach is a web application; there is nothing to install and no plugins.
- A standard internet connection over HTTPS. All connections are encrypted.
- No pupil email addresses are needed. Pupils sign in with a username and password their teacher sets, or join with a class code.
Four ways to set up a class
- Join code: the teacher puts a six-character code on the board and pupils join themselves. Nothing to prepare.
- Pasted names: the teacher pastes the register, one pupil per line, and gets accounts and printable login slips.
- CSV upload: name, email, password. Pupils already on the system are added to the class without touching their password.
- Bromcom MIS import: TypingCoach reads the classes your MIS says a teacher takes this year; one click provisions the register. Set up once per school.
